Generally:  if      is a parameter of the system
•  for               ,  the system oscillates in a regular fashion
•  for               ,  the signal consists of oscillations which
     appear regular, but from time-to-time the oscillations
     are interrupted by a burst of "abnormal" behaviour

Intermittent because, as                    from above, the bursts become increasingly rare;  not smaller, nor shorter duration, but just lower average frequency.
